Welcome to the FAQ page

Hopefully your questions can be answered here.
If not, please fill out the box at the bottom of the page and a member will get back to you as soon as possible.

Do I have to wear traditional square dance clothes to attend dances?

NO! Definitely not. Any attire is appropriate for dances. Tennis shoes or leather bottom shoes are recommended but not required. Some special dances or clubs may request traditional clothing, but dancers in any garb are never turned away. Summer is very casual at Sylvan Squares - shorts and T-shirts welcome, and the rest of the year is pretty casual too.

When are the dances held?

Sylvan Squares dances are usually held 2nd and 4th Fridays at St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Brevard. On rare occasions, dances are held at other locations, or schedules get changed because of holiday schedules.
Our dances currently start at 7:00 and end at 9:00.  We hold a half-hour workshop starting at 6:30 before our dances, for new dancers to practice and experienced dancers to learn something new.

How much does it cost?

Dances are $6.00 per person.  Sylvan Square's annual membership is determined each year, and it is currently $80.00 per year (pro-rated for part-year residents). Among other things, the annual fee covers the cost of dances for members.

Are there age limits?

All ages are welcome. Sylvan Squares has members in their middle years, in their 70s and at most points in between. Square dancing calls for quick thinking and a willingness to have fun; it doesn't require much physical prowess.

Do I need a partner to take classes or become a member?

No, not at all. Sylvan Squares has singles of both genders, and part of the fun of square dancing is changing partners.

What if I am a part-time resident of the area; can I still take classes or be a member of Sylvan Squares?

Yes, you can still be a member. Several of our members started classes in Brevard and then finished up in Florida. Not only is Western Square Dancing standardized worldwide, but classes at most clubs follow pretty much the same schedule, so what you learn in one location will apply anywhere. Part-time residents get a pro-rated membership fee.
